Promenade Walk

Before learning this step you should understand how to do a promenade walk.

Leader’s Footwork:

  • Promenade Walk with Underarm Turn Right: The leader will initiate this step by turning into promenade position. Start by waking Left foot forward. As you do this step raise you left hand to lead the lady under your arm for a turn. Right foot forward and across body. Begin to turn back to closed position and Left foot side rock and replace weight to Right foot. At the end of the step you should be in closed dance position. (count: slow, slow, quick, quick)

Follower’s Footwork:

  • Promenade Walk with Underarm Turn Right: Step iniated with a change to promenade position. Right foot forward. As you take this step the leader will lift your Right arm and you will begin to pivot on your right foot. Continue to turn and take a step with your left foot. As you finish with your right turn you will take a side step with your right foot and rock side to replace you weight to your left foot. (count: slow, slow, quick, quick)

Helpful Tips:

Promenade Position

This step makes the transition to and from promenade position. With promenade position you want to remember that your head and feet stay aligned while your torso continues to face your partner. When you change to promenade position your head and feet will change but you will keep your torso pointed towards your partner.

Underarm Turn Right

Since the lead will continue to walk and progress forward with this step it is important for the follower to progress with their turn. This is not a turn in place. Each step of the turn should progress along with the leader.

Alternative Lead:

Leader’s Footwork:

  • Alternative Lead – Underarm Turn Right: Instead of the leader walking in promenade position he or she will take the Left foot side and slightly back. Raise the left hand to initaite the underarm turn. Next, Right foot back and across and then Left foot side turning towards partner to prepare for closed dance position as the follower finishes their turn. Make sure you rock on left foot and replace weight to right foot to finish the pattern. (count: slow, slow, quick, quick)
  • Note: When the leader takes a side and slightly back step instead of the usual promenade walk it helps to create more space for the turn for the follower.

Ending Variations:

Forward Walk:

For the leader: After completing the step your left foot is free to lead a forward walking step.

Cradle Step / Stationary Basic Ending:

Instead of ending the step with a side rock and replace the weight to the right foot you will take a step back with your right foot to initiate the back half of a Cradle Step or Stationary Basic.
